It is said to be partly motivated by Western leaders having “growing doubts” over Ukraine’s ability to recapture territory – thus a more ‘realistic’ and pragmatic view could take a year to grips with the stalled conflict. The Wall Street Journal describes the German, France, UK plan broadly as follows:
Germany, France and Britain see stronger ties between NATO and Ukraine as a way to encourage Kyiv to start peace talks with Russia later this year, officials from the three governments said, adding that some of Kyiv’s Western partners have doubts about their ability to recover everything. its area.
UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak last week laid out a blueprint for a deal that would give Ukraine much broader access to advanced military equipment, weapons and ammunition to defend itself after the war ends. He said the project should be on the agenda of the annual meeting of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in July.
But if the plan relies on creating a ‘Fortress Ukraine’ through arms deliveries, including tanks and possibly jets, that is unlikely to sit well with Moscow – especially if the plan falls short of making territorial concessions.
