Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot says she “misspoken” when she told South Side residents who didn’t support her not to vote.
Lightfoot is another front-runner for U.S. Rep. Facing a re-election campaign against Jesus “Chuy” Garcia and former Chicago Public Schools CEO Paul Vallas.
It is the most crowded field and according to the latest survey, incumbents are languishing at the third position.
As such, she has opted for a message of voter suppression to give her campaign the boost it needs.
Speaking at a “Get Out the Vote” rally last weekend, the mayor said, “Any vote from the South Side for anybody not named Lightfoot is a vote for Chuy Garcia or Paul Vallas.”
“If you want them to control your fate and your destiny, then stay home,” he said. “Then don’t vote.”

Can you imagine the 24/7 media outrage if a Republican politician told predominantly black voters to stay home and ‘don’t vote’ as Lori Lightfoot did?
Don’t panic though. The Chicago Democrat, who sometimes moonlights as the superhero ‘Rona the Destroyer,’ said she didn’t mean what we’ve all heard her say.
“If I said that everyone everywhere should vote, I would have spoken wrong in the heat of the campaign rally,” he told reporters as he cast his own vote.
“But I’m very consistent in saying that everybody everywhere needs to step up and, as I said today, they need to vote.”

Another off the cuff remark
Lightfoot’s remarks had all the echoes of President Biden telling black voters that if they don’t vote for him, “You’re not black.”
But, because she checks all the coveted diversity boxes that Democrats and the media are always looking for, she doesn’t seem to be much in the way of political backlash.
Earlier this week, Lori Lightfoot told people if they weren’t going to cast their vote, don’t vote– and later apologized for the misspoke.

Garcia and several other opponents in the Chicago mayoral campaign pounced on Lightfoot’s initial comments telling black voters to stay home if they didn’t support her.
“It disqualifies the rhetoric of anyone hoping to lead Chicago, which is a multi-racial and multi-racial city,” Garcia said.
Philanthropist Willie Wilson called Lightfoot’s words “illusory, divisive, dangerous and disappointing”.
But then, Lightfoot has a history of ‘delusional, divisive, dangerous and disappointing’ rhetoric.
In the spring of last year, Lightfoot issued a “call to arms” in the wake of the Supreme Court’s overturning of the abortion ruling. Roe v. Wade.
To my friends in the LGBTQ+ community—the Supreme Court is coming for us. This moment should be a call to arms.

He made those remarks even as pro-abortion advocates protested outside the homes of several Supreme Court justices and the headquarters of a pro-life group in Wisconsin was set on fire and other churches were targeted.
Maybe she just misspoke?
At least if Lightfoot loses the election, he’ll have a career dancing with marching bands to fall back on.
