Ajax Amsterdam forward Mohammed Kudus stole the show at the 47th Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) Awards Night last Saturday at the Accra International Conference Centre, winning two prestigious awards.

Kudus won the Major Sports Personality of the Year and Footballer of the Year awards for the Dutch Eredivisie and Black Stars at the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The talented midfielder faced stiff competition from top sprinter Joseph Paul Amoh and amateur boxer Abraham Mensah to join the list of the nation’s sporting greats.

The 22-year-old star scored 20 goals for both club and country and helped Ajax win the Dutch Eredivisie a record 36 times in the 2021-2022 calendar year.

He made a huge impact in Ajax’s UEFA Champions League campaign by scoring four times but his side were exited in the group stage of the competition.

The 25-year-old Amoh failed to win a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham last year.

Equally overlooked is 18-year-old Abraham Mensah, who won silver at last year’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

In the Amateur Boxer of the Year category, Abraham Mensah defeated Joseph Comey and won the award. Comey received the Discovery of the Year award following his silver medal performance at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

In an interview with Graphic Sports, Mensah hoped to work harder this year to win titles at the upcoming African Games.

“I am very happy to win this award as I worked really hard last year. These are some of the things that motivate us to give our best.

“The focus is to continue working hard to win titles at the upcoming African Games later this year,” he said.

Daniel Afriyie Barnih won the Footballer of the Year (Home) award after his impressive performance in the Ghana Premier League with Hearts of Oak, while Joseph Paul Amoah was victorious in the Male Athlete of the Year after beating Benjamin Ajamati.

US-born Deborah Acquah has won the Female Athlete of the Year award after winning a bronze medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

In the Female Footballer of the Year category, Ophelia Amponsah was adjudged the winner, while her club, Ampem Darkoa, emerged as Club of the Year.

Ampem Darkoa’s coach Nana Adarkwa was adjudged coach of the year, Patricia Nyameki bagged the para athlete of the year award and Kojo Barney bagged the pro golfer of the year award.

The Ghana Army’s Rashaka Katadat was named the Volleyball Player of the Year, Dr Kwabena Adu Poku was named the Chess Player of the Year, while the Badminton Player of the Year award went to Alfus Kelvin.

Abiuku Gaike Jackson won the Swimmer of the Year award, Israel Akili finished as Table Tennis’ Most Exciting Player and Samson Avia Aweh won the Cricketer of the Year award.

Adijatu Sulemana of GRA Ladies won the Women’s Hockey Player of the Year award, while Anthony Bokye was crowned Cyclist of the Year.
