Appiah said when expressing his displeasure with the way football is going in the country at the moment.
The former Juventus star hinted that his sacrifice was not appreciated enough and said he hopes things will improve soon.
“A painful thing is that some of us are very humble. But when you know your worth, you don’t want to do certain things or associate with certain people. We all want to help because we’ve been helped before. If that’s not enough,” Appiah told Sompa TV.
“There was a time when not all (players) were interested in playing for the Black Stars. There was a time when I had to pay for the players’ flight tickets to Ghana and there was a time when I paid the winning bonuses.
“So today if I see how things are done, I ask why I wasted my money? But we hope that one day it will be good.”
The 42-year-old expressed his desire to one day watch the former footballer lead the administration of the sport in the country.
According to him, many of his former colleagues have stepped aside and are not allowing him to bring his knowledge to the fore.
“Legends and ex-players don’t get a chance in football administration. I learned something, football is run by footballers. It’s not grammar or English that you speak,” He said.
“It’s about insights, that’s why when I go to Italy, I can understand a coach who speaks Italian without speaking Italian.
“One day, I’m not necessarily Stephen Appiah, but I hope one day; One of us leads and we all support.
Appiah called time on his football career in 2012 after serving as Ghana’s captain when they qualified for the first ever FIFA World Cup in Germany in 2006.
