“President Akufo-Addo should refuse to sign these bills”
Kwame Payanim accused lawmakers of pushing the country into a financial abyss, neglected to ask relevant questions and criticized the 8th Parliament for passing three new taxes.
“After the finance ministry has done its job, they should have an economic model that shows what the economy will look like after the domestic debt swap? What is going to happen?
Are we going to have a depression and low economic growth in the next three or five years, and if so, what will happen to government revenue? No one is looking at it and it goes to Parliament.
“We expect members of Parliament to consult their people, think about it and ask questions. They will not pass them, so our last hope is for the President to thank Parliament, because I will not sign this bill because it is not good.
Parliament on April 1 passed three revenue measures, the government’s attempt to generate about ₵4 billion in internal revenue.
These measures, according to the government, will enable full processes to secure a $3 billion International Monetary Fund (IMF) program.
Mr. Pianim said the current parliament “We will go down in history as the worst parliament Ghana has ever had.”
