Drivers of the Atibi-Nkawkaw taxi rank in the Kwahu South Municipality of the Eastern Region have decided to increase their fares due to the Kwahu Easter-induced gridlocks.
Before Easter celebrations, passengers were charged GH¢10.00 from Nkwakwa to Atibie but passengers are now charged GH¢15.00 for the same distance.
Due to the Easter celebrations, there was heavy traffic in almost all the towns in the Kwahu community. So the drivers had to spend a lot of time maneuvering their way through the gridlock.
As motorists could not cash in at their usual speed due to traffic congestion, it was necessary to increase fares to cover their fuel costs due to traffic congestion.
Some drivers told Graphic Online that they would return to the old fares after Easter.
Kofi Yeboah, one of the drivers plying the Atibie-Nkawkaw route, said Easter traffic was making his business unprofitable.
He said drivers have not increased fares to take advantage of revelers during the Easter celebrations but should ensure that they do not incur losses.
“Due to the slow movement of vehicles due to heavy traffic, it causes us a lot in terms of fuel costs,” said Mr Yeboah.
Another taxi driver, Amoh Tavia, said the increase was very reasonable as his vehicles could not move freely as they do on normal days due to the Easter occasion.
Some passengers who spoke to Graphic Online said it was not right for drivers to charge them extra money.
Akosua Korang, an indigene of Atibi, who lives in Accra, said it is not good for taxi drivers in the area to increase their fares because there is no increase in the cost of fuel.
For her, taxi drivers were making things difficult for revelers to move freely and enjoy the celebration.
“Don’t take advantage of Easter celebrations or build heavy traffic to increase taxi fares because you are making things difficult for people to enjoy the celebration,” he said.
