Going out with friends, shared interests or a family reunion? If the inevitable ‘Hey, let’s do a WhatsApp group’ and the barrage of incoming notifications and emojis fills you with dread… there’s an easy escape you can use without stepping on too many toes.
A sneaky new WhatsApp trick lets you quietly leave groups without alerting everyone.
The messaging app has now introduced a feature that allows users to leave chats without embarrassment or causing too much drama.
Last year, it emerged that WhatsApp was testing a new feature, which was first spotted by independent WhatsApp expert WABetaInfo.
It allows users to leave group chats silently without sending a notification to other members.
This means that if you’ve been added to chats you didn’t want to be a part of, or plans for an event are long gone, you can slide now and avoid any awkward moments.
The new feature can prevent awkward encounters with more sensitive group members who take your departure badly.
With this new feature, only group administrators will be notified of your departure.
Of course, group members will be able to see that you’ve left by looking at the list of participants on the group details page.
Before the feature was introduced, WhatsApp would send a notification to the entire group when someone left.
But with the new rollout, once users enable the feature in their WhatsApp settings they won’t be able to see the message, regardless of which group you choose to leave.
However, one thing to note is that admins – the people who created the group – will not be able to use this feature in that particular chat.
Therefore, they are only able to exit in groups they are not in charge of.
How to exit chats on Android?
For Android users, they can simply tap and hold the group you want to leave.
Then, they should tap on the three-dot icon at the top right corner of their screen.
Select Exit.
Then you will see a message on the screen that only the group admins will be notified that you have left the group.
How to exit chats on iPhone?
iPhone users or those who have WhatsApp installed on their Apple device need to swipe left on the group they want to leave.
Tap on More.
Then click Exit.
The user will see a message on the screen, ‘Only group admins will be notified that you have left the group’.
Otherwise, if you’re worried about the backlash you’ll get from leaving the group, you can turn off read receipts.
This means that your contacts will no longer be able to see when you view their message.
However, you should know that by turning off your read receipts, you will also not be able to see when others have read your messages.
To disable read messages, you need to:
– Open WhatsApp
– Go to settings
– Accounts later
– Click on Privacy
– Toggle off for read receipts later
