Sports bettors in Ghana have expressed displeasure over the government’s move to tax lottery and sports betting.
Some bettors say, “I can lose all my bets in a year, so if I win one day and then take a 10 percent cut, that means I’ve lost.”
“Honestly, it’s not fair. We’re suffering because the system isn’t good so it’s not good to take 10 percent of my betting winnings.”
Sports bettors urged the government to reconsider its plans to levy a 10% withholding tax on winnings from lotteries, sports betting and games of chance at the payment stage.
The betting industry in Ghana has seen tremendous growth over the past decade, which has led to many betting companies setting up shop in the country.
In recent years, sports betting has largely divided opinion among Ghanaians, with some sections highlighting its effects on the youth.
Others believe that betting is legal and therefore cannot be described as a bad practice when no laws are broken.
