With highly classified military and intelligence documents appearing online, detailing everything from Ukraine’s air defense to Israel’s Mossad spy agency, U.S. officials are scrambling to identify the source of the leak, which some Western security experts and U.S. officials suspect could be anyone. Officials say the breadth of content covered in the documents, which touch on the war in Ukraine, China, the Middle East and Africa, suggests the leak may have come from American rather than allied countries.
“The focus now is on the U.S. leak, because most of the documents were in U.S. hands only,” former Pentagon official Michael Mulroy told Reuters in an interview.
US officials said the investigation was in its early stages and those conducting it had not ruled out the possibility that pro-Russian elements were behind the leak, one of the most serious security breaches since more than 700,000 documents, videos and diplomatic material. The cables appeared on the WikiLeaks website in 2013.
