Police have arrested more than 250 motorbike riders for jumping red lights in Accra.
The move is part of the Police Action Against Rider Indiscipline (PAARI) programme, a road safety intervention to check indiscipline among motorcycle users on Ghana’s roads.
Started in April 2023, motorcycle users arrested for violating road traffic rules and other traffic offenses during this period were sensitized and taken through some road traffic education and subsequently alerted to law-enforcement.
A press statement issued by the police service on Friday, March 2023 said “After the introduction of the initiative, it has been observed that a good number of riders are now obeying traffic rules, especially riding on pavements in areas where red lights are not jumped and facing oncoming traffic.
“The benefit of Operation PAARI is reflected in the available data on road traffic accidents in the country, which indicates that for the first time in a long time, road traffic accidents involving motorbikes have reduced significantly.”
While we applaud all law-abiding riders for adhering to road traffic rules, we would like to warn repeat riders against disregarding traffic rules as the law will surely catch them,” it added.
