Green performed this squat as if he had already been there and done it.
With each new year, roughly 12 months into their proverbial training mud, some athletes prefer to take their time and reach potentially loftier goals. Such a sentiment doesn’t apply to young Jacob Green, who hit the ground running in 2023 with his latest staggering feat of strength.
On January 8, 2023, Green posted a video to his Instagram profile There he captured a 254.9-kilogram (562-pound) back squat with knee wraps.. As the title of his post suggests, a successful lift is one All Time Personal Record (PR). Along with his knee wraps, Green used a lifting belt to help him get the PR. Green also performed a squat A slow and deliberate three-second eccentric, or descending phase. Although he most recently competed in the 100-kilogram (220-pound) weight class in May 2022, it is unclear what Green’s bodyweight was at the time of the lift.
A USA Powerlifting (USAPL) juniors powerlifter of late, this young dynamo is no stranger to crushing it on the green squat rack and across the gym. In fact, it is in line with stellar preference for a growing phenomenon.
Two days after logging this one-rep max squat PR, Green shared a clip of him completing a 234.9-kilogram (518-pound) squat for a five-rep PR. When it comes to leg endurance, the green is no slouch. He captured a 200-kilogram (441-pound) squat AMRAP (as many reps as possible) for 12 reps in November 2022. He had entered that session aiming to finish nine reps, but the weight of his stacked barbell “felt. Too easy,” so he continued to push himself further.
About two weeks before showing new torque in his piston legs at a one-rep max, Greene benched 176.4-kilogram (385-pounds) for a three-rep PR in late December 2022. That particular lift apparently came as a small liberating moment. It was “out of character” to fail in a similar third rep earlier in August 2022, he wrote. Naturally, the best way for an athlete to “redeem” himself is to return to the same weight and the same setup and push successfully in this case.
Green’s competitive history is somewhat spotty as an athlete, having changed weight classes and divisions as he matured in recent years. Each Open Powerlifting, he doesn’t appear to be a rival for loading his calendar with a cadre of events annually. His most recent performance was a win at the 2022 USAPL Virginia Open State Championship in the junior division and in the 100-kilogram (220-pound) weight class.
With nearly a year’s worth of time ahead of him, Green is open to making 2023 a tentpole moment at a comfortable pace in his potential career. Based on their start to the new year, they should have plenty to celebrate on New Year’s Eve this coming December.
