Ofori-Atta thanked the labor unions for cooperating with the government for the 30 percent wage increase.
On Thursday, January 12, 2023, the Minister of Employment and Labor Relations, Ignatius Bafour-Awuah, announced the increase in a meeting with labor unions.
The increase came into effect on January 1, 2023.
Baffour-Awuah said, “From August last year, we started meeting to determine the basic salary for 2023.
“It was later in July that we worked together to offer 15 percent of the cola, a relief for the hardships the Ghanaian worker is going through. Our hope was to complete these negotiations by December 2022.”
Addressing the media, Ken Ofori-Atta said the government is committed to ensuring a peaceful environment on the labor front, even though the increase will have a toll on the budget.
“It will take a toll on the budget, but with enhanced productivity and the commitment we have made to each other, I am confident that this will ensure peace in this country as we look at the pension and labor issues,” he said.
