JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: Volunteer Center Supervisor

REPORTS TO: Volunteer Center Manager

DAYS & HOURS: T, W, Th - 11:30am-8:30pm; F-8am-4:30pm; Every other Saturday - 8am-2pm

WORK ENVIRONMENT: On-site, Not Remote or Hybrid

PAY: Starting at $25-26/hourly

STATUS: Non-Exempt

POSITION SUMMARY:

Volunteers support our mission to end hunger together, which requires a Volunteer Center team with experience in a fast-paced warehouse setting, a high degree of customer service, and excellent communication skills. The Volunteer Center Supervisor will lead a multi-member team of Volunteer Center Ambassadors and provide support to the Volunteer Center Manager and Volunteer Coordinator. The supervisor must be able to perform all duties required of a Volunteer Center Ambassador and provide coverage as needed. This position is an integral part of the Volunteer Engagement team, delivering a best-in-class experience for Second Harvest Heartland’s voluntary workforce while upholding the known and trusted brand of Second Harvest Heartland.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

STAFF SUPERVISION AND LEADERSHIP:

  • Lead a team of Volunteer Center Ambassadors, providing direct daily supervision and leadership.
  • Create a positive environment that fosters two-way communication and a strong sense of trust.
  • Promote a collaborative team culture in all working relationships.
  • Proactively and positively manage concerns with VCAs as they arise.
  • Exemplify professionalism through behavior and outstanding reliability.
  • Promote safety practices in all volunteer areas and throughout the warehouse.
  • Ensure the staffing schedule aligns with and meets the needs of the Volunteer Center’s activities and food sourcing demands.
  • Conduct monthly one-on-one meetings with all VCAs.
  • Lead daily huddles to ensure all team members understand project flow, work assignments, and are up to date on information pertaining to the Volunteer Center.
  • Provide onboarding and serve as the primary trainer for the VCA role.

VOLUNTEER & GUEST EXPERIENCE

  • In partnership with the entire Volunteer Center team, facilitate a best-in-class volunteer experience by upholding a high standard of customer service.
  • Along with the Lead VCA, serve as the next level contact for volunteer questions, concerns, or issues that a VCA cannot address.
  • Address an ever-changing environment in a positive, highly flexible, and solutions-oriented manner.
  • Effectively utilize the volunteer management database system to monitor registrations and shift fulfillment.

WAREHOUSE & PRODUCTION

  • Train VCAs to oversee volunteers in ways that promote food safety, personal safety, and productivity
  • Train VCAs on safe operation of warehouse equipment and evaluate for certification
  • Oversee corrective actions required as a result of internal safety and food safety inspections
  • Fulfill the obligations of the Prerequisite and Food Safety Programs by participating in annual training and education, daily upkeep of assigned documents and practicing food safety through the use of SOPs and GMPs in managing the daily volunteer production.

  • Follow food safety and safety regulations relating to OSHA, AIB, USDA and other company-related regulations.
  • Handle food safely and complete ServSafe Food Handler certification within the first 1 month of employment. Maintain Food Safety and Forklift Certification.
  • Serve as an Emergency Response Team member
  • Perform other duties as assigned to ensure smooth operation.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent; preference given for some post-secondary education.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of team leadership experience.
  • Proven ability to supervise people, including superior communication and motivation skills, conflict resolution, and the ability to act fairly and decisively.
  • Previous warehouse experience, including pallet jack and forklift operation, strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated exceptional customer service skills, including a high degree of cultural competency.
  • Flexibility, adaptability, and strong problem-solving abilities.
