Job Description

Washington and Lee University Library Special Collections and Archives offers a part-time internship position for individuals currently enrolled in a graduate program focused on either library science or archival studies. This individual will be trained in most aspects of special collections and archival work, including reference, instruction, and processing. The internship provides a graduate student with practical experience in special collections and archives. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to engage with both public services and descriptive functions in the form of regular reference shifts, processing collections, and aiding in instruction where necessary. The individual in this position will undergo specific training regarding handling and description of special collections and archives materials within the appropriate platforms (including but not limited to ArchivesSpace and LibAnswers).

Essential Functions:

• Engage in the description of collections at various stages of the archival process including intake inventories, accessioning, and collection description, adhering to current standards.
• Assist in public services including staffing regular reading room shifts and aiding in the answering of reference questions.
• Aid in the day-to-day activities of Special Collections and Archives including programming and instruction.
• Other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: This position is part-time, non-benefit eligible. Candidates should have consistent availability to work at least 12 hours per week between the hours of 9:00 am -4:00 pm Monday-Friday during the academic year.

Minimum Pay: $18:00 per hour

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree required.
• Applicants should currently be enrolled in a graduate program focused either library science or archival studies
• A regular schedule of at least 12 hours per week during the business/academic day are required. Functional understanding of Microsoft Excel or similar program.
• Willingness to learn new skills and an attention to detail
• Ability to follow instructions and comfort asking for clarification and help
