Registration with the state Board of Pharmacy required within 30 days of employment
Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification within 2 years of employment
One year commitment after certification required.
Must have a valid driver’s license or have other appropriate accommodations to fulfill the responsibility of this position.
Position Summary:
The Pharmacy Technician works in a hospital retail pharmacy environment. The Pharmacy Technician duties consist of assisting pharmacists in compounding, preparing and dispensing medical prescriptions to the public after receiving information from customers or patients according to written/faxed prescriptions. Maintains proper storage and security conditions for drugs; ensures that equipment is functioning properly and assists in resolution of equipment maintenance and repair; controls inventory stock level and timeline to ensure adequate supplies. Assists with billing related functions. May assist with departmental quality assurance and other customer- or patient- focused services with oversight from supervisory staff; assists in the creation and maintenance of a safe working environment and conditions that adhere to state laws and regulations. Requires us of and proficiency in multiple computer programs.
In a medical center or institutional setting, the Pharmacy Technician duties consist of unit dose dispensing, IV Admixtures, compounding and automated dispensing devices. Ensures that equipment is functioning properly and assists in resolution of equipment maintenance and repair. Responsible for assisting the pharmacist in the provision of pharmaceutical care to the patients by following established regulations, standards and practices. Must possess the skills necessary to understand written policies and procedures, perform various functions under the supervision of a registered pharmacist and participate in departmental problem- solving when needed. Must demonstrate good written and verbal communication skills and be able to learn and utilize new technology as the profession of pharmacy evolves. Assists with billing related functions. May assist with departmental quality assurance and other customer - or patient - focused services with oversight form supervisory staff; assists in the creation and maintenance of a safe working environment and conditions that adhere to state laws and regulations. Requires use of and proficiency in multiple computer programs.
The Pharmacy Technician positions located in different work environments and duties may very base upon location or setting; also depending on location, there may be an overlap of retail/inpatient responsibilities.
Requirements:Education/Experience:
High school graduate or GED preferred.
Required Credentials (Licensure, Certification, or Registration):
South Dakota Technician Registration required (within 30 days of date of hire), Pharmacy Technician Certification preferred.

Employment Variables:
Dependent upon whether tech is full time or part time status, normal work week is Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM. This may vary dependent upon the needs according to workload. Rubella titer will be drawn initially as well as TB skin testing upon hire and immunization required if no past exposure or indication of immunization.
Job Knowledge and Skills:
Possesses skills necessary to understand written policy and procedures. Has the ability to operate standard computer programs (Word, Excel, etc.) Possesses written and verbal communication skills.

Makes deliveries as requested. Assists in answering telephone promptly and properly identifies self when answering the phone. Consistently polite and refers callers to appropriate person for assistance.
Follows Policies and Procedures
Completes all required competencies on time and with minimal supervision. Is conscientious in regard to personal hygiene. Dresses appropriately for work duties. Complies with Winner Regional Healthcare Center’s policies and procedures. Selects appropriate and measurable goals. Meets selected goals from previous year. Present at work station when shift starts and stays until shift is completed. Absenteeism and tardiness is kept to a minimum.
Completes All Work Duties Efficiently and Accurately
Work documentation is complete, accurate and legible. All problems left for follow-up are communicated to personnel on the next shift. Non-essential interruptions, i.e., personal phone calls, do not interfere with work or with other staff work. Personal phone calls and work are not done on hospital time. Completes Pyxis related duties accurately and on time. Is able to troubleshoot common Pyxis problems, refill / load / discrepancy problems are minimal. Packages accurately and is able to complete bulk packaging when needed. Accepts/volunteers for special assignments when requested. Assignments are complete and accurate and done in a timely manner. Effectively contributes to project/task.
