What You Will Do Support our National Security Mission as a Nuclear Facilities Mechanical Design Engineer with Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL)! In this position with Engineering Services Division (ES-DO) you will develop, maintain, and apply a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions within the Laboratory. ES Groups are responsible for implementing the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program at LANL in support of systems, structure and component modifications and new installations. With this opportunity you will support nuclear, accelerator or non-nuclear facilities across 38 square miles of the Laboratory and promote a workplace culture centered on mutual respect and inclusivity, ensuring freedom from discrimination and harassment for all.
Note: This position will be filled at either the Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3 or Nuclear Facilities Engineer 4 level depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Nuclear Facilities Mechanical Engineer 3 ($122,300 - $206,300): As a Nuclear Facilities Mechanical Design Engineer, you will concurrently work on multiple design teams shaping LANL's facilities and infrastructure to serve the needs of a growing and changing Laboratory. Your teams will provide engineering consulting services typical of any or all project phases, from programming, scoping, design, construction, commissioning, and operation. Your responsibilities will include:
- Assess condition of existing facilities and infrastructure systems and expertly apply engineering judgement to engineering challenges.
- Generate written recommendations, develop design scopes, and estimate design efforts
- Produce Construction Contract Documents, provide reviews of outside A/E designs, and review construction submittals, provide RFI responses and generate Document revisions.
- Interface and coordinate with project stakeholders, foster timely coordination between all design disciplines, and ensure timely engagement of third-party resources such as Sustainability and Commissioning
- Adhere to LANL's Engineering Standards, Conduct of Engineering, prevailing codes and standards, and ensure integration of green initiatives on all projects; Support organizational initiatives for improvements of design and business practices
- Mentor junior design personnel
Nuclear Facilities Mechanical Engineer Level 4 ($146,800 - $254,700): In addition to duties listed above, the level 4 role includes the following job duties:
- Identify and/or lead activities within mechanical engineering in support of facility design, operation and maintenance
- Make visionary organizational contributions regarding design and business practices
- Act as a coordinating figure and subject-matter-expert (SME), helping to ensure designs are code-compliant and meet customer needs
- Use broad and/or unique knowledge and skills to contribute to improvement of LANL's Engineering Standards
- Use independent and wide latitude judgment in determining course of action to accomplish objectives
- Facilitate technical growth of the mechanical design team
- Assist Team Lead with work planning, staffing projections and hiring
What You Need Minimum Job Requirements: Nuclear Facilities Mechanical Engineer 3: - Demonstrated broad-based, engineering experience with projects involving mechanical design for new facilities and facility modifications, including nuclear or hazardous (rad) facilities; preparing calculations, application of engineering methods, and application of technology aided engineering tools to facility and operations-based engineering challenges; supporting construction execution, including timely review of submittals, requests for information, design changes, aid in non-conformance issues, validation of commissioning documentation and production of accurate as-built documents.
- Experience with engineering principle of operation of both mechanical and plumbing building systems; design and principle of operation of building automation systems; application of building codes, standards and green initiatives related to facilities design
Additional Job Requirements for Nuclear Facilities Mechanical Engineer 4: - Experience leading a design team and/or organization, and expertise in industry, regulatory, or Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to your engineering discipline
- Minimum of 12 years of experience in engineering work planning, budgeting, and design coordination, and demonstrated broad and/or unique expert knowledge of engineering systems and calculations, applications of engineering methods, and application technology aided engineering tools to conventional and non-conventional facility and operations-based engineering problems
Education/Experience for Nuclear Facilities Mechanical Engineer 3: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 6 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above, as well as relevant hazardous and/or rad experience.
Education/Experience for Nuclear Facilities Mechanical Engineer 4: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 12 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above, as well as relevant hazardous and/or rad experience.
Desired Qualifications: - Advanced engineering or technical degree
- Current registration as a Professional Engineer (PE)
- For Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3: Current EIT Certification (any US State)
- For Nuclear Facilities Engineer 4: Current NCEES Professional Engineering License in Mechanical Engineering (any US State)
- Professional experience with DOE and LANL Engineering Standards and Conduct of Engineering principles and procedures and in design and principle of operation of infrastructure systems
- National Code Committee participation
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular Position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program at the Nuclear Facilities Engineer 4 level. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
