Duties Summary

Performs routine professional engineering work in the design, installation, operation, and maintenance of mechanical equipment and systems, and/or assists in the review and analysis of plans and specifications for mechanical engineering features and compliance with code requirements; and performs other related duties as required.

There is one (1) immediate permanent full-time vacancy with the Department of Water Supply - Operations Division in Hilo.

The eligible list may be used for other permanent and temporary vacancies as they arise during the life of the list. Temporary appointment may lead to conversion to permanent appointment.

Examples of Duties


  • Assists in making office and field studies of proposed projects to determine the design, type, and location of equipment to be installed.
  • Assists in making preliminary and final acceptance tests of pumping units or other mechanical equipment.
  • Assists in conducting periodic tests on pumping units to determine any change in efficiency and corrective action necessary.
  • Compiles pumping and other data.
  • Assists in checking plans and specifications of mechanical equipment and appurtenances.
  • Makes necessary mechanical calculations.
  • Prepares and submits reports.
  • May requisition supplies and equipment.

Minimum Qualification Requirements


Training and Experience:
A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to:
  • graduation from an accredited college or university with major work (baccalaureate degree) in mechanical engineering, (scan and attach a copy of your official college transcript to your application), and
  • possession of a valid State of Hawai'i driver's license (Class 3) or any other valid comparable driver's license at time of filing. (You will be required to submit your valid driver's license at the time of hire).
Examination: All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points. An education and experience evaluation will be conducted based on the applicant's training, education and experience as presented in the application.

Knowledge of: the basic principles and practices of general mechanical engineering; engineering mechanics, mechanics of materials, machine design, and thermodynamics; electrical systems as they apply to mechanical equipment; and higher mathematics.

Ability to: apply mechanical engineering principles; interpret and apply a variety of guidelines and precedents to the solution of specific problems; review and analyze plans and specifications pertaining to mechanical engineering features; interpret and apply technical provisions of various codes; prepare engineering reports and correspondence; and deal tactfully and effectively with engineers, architects, and the public.
