Job Description

We are looking for motivated summer interns to join our team and gain valuable experience in the workers' compensation insurance field as a Loss Prevention intern. You will shadow LP professionals and support activities such as policyholder visits, safety assessments, and incident investigations, while developing your skills in time management, communication, and risk evaluation. Additionally, you will gain knowledge in loss prevention, claims management, and underwriting.

This is a full time temporary internship and will last 9-12 weeks long from June-August.

Summer interns will participate as active team members by projecting a professional and customer friendly image of the Company while performing various functions to support the assigned business unit. Develops critical thinking skills, independent time management and gains familiarity with the internal operations and best practices of SFM and workers’ compensation insurance. You will learn about the life cycle of a workers’ compensation claim, how to assess risk for prospective and current policyholders, and other loss prevention activities. Developing familiarity with the internal operations and best practices of SFM and workers’ compensation insurance is a key aspect of this summer experience.

Schedule

  • Approximate work availability from June through August 2024 (9-12 weeks) required. SFM will work to accommodate university schedules. Weekly schedule will be Monday - Thursday and working at least 30 hours per week.

What You’ll be doing

  • Works side-by-side with an experienced Loss Prevention Representative to learn the role of Loss Prevention, including working with a business team and policyholder contacts.

Experiences will or may include:

  • Participate in policyholder field visits with loss prevention representative to identify workplace hazards, conduct incident investigations and communicate with policyholder leadership.
  • Assists policyholders with requested safety services and/or training relating to major sources of injury that may include ergonomic s, slips and falls, noise monitoring, strains & sprains and other hazards.
  • Support internal customers such as claims and underwriting through effective communication and documentation
  • Analyze policyholder loss data to identify trends at each policyholder for the identification and recommendation of loss prevention improvements
  • Follow up on recommended safety improvements for policyholders
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • May be asked to complete a research project on a safety topic or develop a resource for use by the team.
  • Learns the roles, functions and responsibilities of a successful staff member in the workers’ compensation insurance industry.

SFM Business Operations:

  • May work with other interns to develop and complete a meaningful project work over the course of the internship and give a year end presentation to Senior Management.
  • May attend meetings related to the industry and other departmental meetings within SFM.
  • Will be exposed to and will learn about workers’ compensation and insurance industry as whole; may have opportunity to job shadow within the different areas in the organization.
  • Meets with various leaders from around the organization to conduct informational career
  • Learns and understands SFM’s corporate culture.

We’re looking for:

Education and Experience

  • Experience using a PC and basic keyboarding skills.
  • Four-year college or master’s degree (in progress) with emphasis in science, safety, or risk management.
  • Approximate work availability from June through August (9-12 weeks) required.

  • Working independently and managing various tasks while maintaining quality is essential

  • Must be able to be work onsite at corporate headquarters and travel to policyholder sites.

Physical Requirements

Work takes place in a semi paperless environment within an office setting or home office setting, using standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopies, which requires being stationary for extended periods of time.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms and work with close vision. This position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies, up to 20 pounds. Work is performed indoors with little to no exposure to extreme outdoor weather conditions.
