Money is one of the main issues that has created friction between Prince Harry and his father, now King Charles III, a new book claims.
The 2016 incident was revealed in excerpts from Robert Jobson’s book “Our King: Charles III – The Man and the Monarch Revealed”, published by the Daily Mail.
According to the book, Harry was furious after his father made a new rule limiting who could be on the royal payroll after he told his family he planned to marry Meghan Markle, now named the Duchess of Sussex.
“Are you sure, Harold?” Prince William asked Harry by the book. (Harry’s recent autobiography revealed that William sometimes calls his younger brother “Harold,” even though that’s not his real name.)
The book said Charles did not offer congratulations, but noted that while the royal purse is now supporting Queen Consort Camilla and William’s family, Meghan has no money.
The book called the statement a “bombshell” and noted that it “infuriated Harry”.
Harry called his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II from California to complain, but it went nowhere, the book said.
“Finally, she asked to speak directly to his father. A source said: ‘Her Majesty found Prince Harry’s calls very difficult and exhausting. She did not want to interfere with the father/son relationship and was urging him to speak to his father.
“Prince Charles stopped taking his son’s calls after he swore at him and repeatedly asked for money. When asked why the Queen disapproved of Charles, he said he was not a bank.
The book says that by the time the Queen died last year, “Harry had precious few supporters left in the family. Even the Rani, who had always had a great affection for him, eventually tired of his outbursts.
The book said the Queen was “tired of the volatile exchanges between Harry and his brother, which sometimes took place in her presence” and the disparagement of the royal family when Harry and Meghan were interviewed.
“At the time, the Queen was clearly mystified by the couple’s behaviour, describing it as ‘quite mad’. However, she believed her grandson was ‘so consumed’ by his love for his wife that it was ‘clouding his judgement,'” the excerpt said.
The excerpt noted that Meghan had a strained relationship from the beginning.
“The bride-to-be’s first introduction to William and Catherine at Kensington Palace left Meghan with the impression that Catherine was insufferable. Later, the Duchess of Cambridge – pregnant at the time – demanded Meghan apologize after talking about Catherine’s hormones, saying she had a ‘baby-brain’, the book said.
The new book isn’t the first to note that money is an important issue for Meghan.
Tom Bower, author of the book “Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the War Between the Windsors,” has called Meghan “money-obsessed,” and expects the royal family to have vast amounts of ready cash.
“Her biggest surprise and disappointment was that Prince Harry had very little money. She had imagined he would be worth a billion, but not a billion, and now she has to make up for it,” the Daily Mail reported.
“What we’re seeing is an extraordinary marketing campaign by Meghan, whose first interest is herself and her second interest is money,” he said, according to GB News.
