Almost straight out of a dark comedy, infamous cartel leader Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzmán and one of his family’s lawyers decide to expand their careers. Cattle singer
Mariel Colon, who goes by the stage name “La Abogada” (“The Attorney” in Spanish), isn’t leaving the legal field entirely. Colon, who worked on the legal team of criminal sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein before his “suicide,” currently represents El Chapo’s wife, Emma Coronel.

Art Mimics Reality?
Colon recently debuted his first music video, inspired by his career as a lawyer… a lawyer with a thing for bad guys.
In the video, Colon portrays a lawyer in love with his criminal client, who is facing a pretty hefty time behind bars. Some lyrics, “Good morning your honor, may I speak: Today I am here to defend my heart.”
Is it a little weird since she’s a lawyer? Or is it weird because she’s a lawyer who worked for a cartel leader and one of the most high-profile sex traffickers in modern history? Either answer is acceptable.
The video continues and shows Colon visiting her client in jail, where she tells him in dramatic fashion, “I’m no longer your defense attorney” because she loves him and therefore morally cannot be his lawyer.
It’s good to know that at least in these fictional situations there is a moral line she draws in her art.

She’s got friends in strange places
Which came first? A passion for singing or law?
According to Colon in an interview with Univisión, she said “I’m a singer, a lawyer. I’ve always had a passion for singing and I thought it was the perfect moment to start my career as a singer, because I know I have great talent.
“My plan was to become a lawyer for the music industry, but ended up being a criminal attorney and that changed everything.”
In 2017, Colon moved to New York, where he became part of El Chapo’s legal team after graduating college. Did a recent college graduate end up working for one of the world’s most dangerous criminal families? He applied for a paralegal job posted on Craigslist and the rest was history.
“I think I’m proud that El Chapo saw me as an artist,” Colon said in his interview, “and Emma Coronel is very happy with my transformation and I’m impatiently waiting for them to get out of prison and start new projects together.”
El Chapo is currently behind bars at the supermax prison ADX Florence in Colorado, where he will spend the rest of his days. Despite this, Colon is currently one of three people with daily access to Guzmán.
Coronel, on the other hand, is serving just three years for helping El Chapo escape from a Mexican prison in 2015. At least while she’s out there, she joins Colon on his journey to superstardom.
A happy ending? A strange ending for sure.
