The last few years have been a wake-up call to American families across the country about what their children are learning and at the same time not learning in our nation’s public schools. From failing math scores to declining literacy rates, the state of our education system is perhaps the worst since public school construction.
Thanks in part to the COVID lockdowns, parents saw what their students were learning instead of arithmetic and phonics. Everything from critical race theory to gender theory is incorporated into the national curriculum as teachers unions and diversity consultancies bank on brainwashing our children.
So many young Americans from school age to my age cannot function in normal society, cannot understand the difference between communism and socialism. Some states have put in place mechanisms to strengthen this vessel. However, the Virginia state senate’s objections to teaching the dangers of communism were peculiar, to say the least.
.@DelJAvoli Presented HB 1816 requiring students to learn about the dangers and victims of communism. what did @VEA4 kids Should I say?
Just ask. We cannot do it justice. You can’t do this stuff. https://t.co/5Akexs58yD pic.twitter.com/MUabRPOnMe

We don’t want to offend
Virginia Representative John Avolley proposed House Bill 1816, which would have included not only basic knowledge of Communism but also the dangers associated with Communism in history and social studies courses in the state. The bill would require the governor to declare November 7 as Victims of Communism Day, requiring the state’s public schools to honor the more than 100 million victims of Communism.
This seems reasonable. After all, we have entire months devoted to other specific aspects of history; How can it be considered harmful to ensure that, for one day a year, public school students take the time to understand the true effects of Communism over the years?

According to a state teachers union, doing so could discriminate against Asian Americans. Virginia Education Association (VEA) research coordinator Emily Yen said of the bill, “Four of the five current communist regimes are countries in Asia. We are concerned that this bill will subject Asian American students to anti-Asian sentiment, and we intend to oppose this bill.
And just like that, politicians folded into Big Education as usual.

Parents, you need to spend some extra time teaching your children about the very real dangers of socialism and communism. It has caused tens of millions of deaths worldwide. pic.twitter.com/myYcr58lYl

A flawed argument
The idea that we shouldn’t teach aspects of history and current events can discriminate against a demographic of students because our society needs to stop teaching any part of history or current events. But, unfortunately, we live in a time where anyone from any group finds offense in anything, including food.
Ms. Yen’s argument is absurd and suggests that our children are incapable of understanding the difference between what communists have done and are currently doing in the name of their flawed political structure and their Asian-American peers. This is not only insulting, but also quite telling if true.
On the flip side, some of the arguments against passing this bill are based on current state curriculum standards that say communism is already taught. Currently, in Virginia, Communism is taught in two departments:
- Rise of Autocracy and Conflicts and Revolutionary Movements in Asia
- Major leaders including Mao Zedong, Chiang Kai-shek, and Deng Xiaoping in China and Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam
So why insist on codifying the teaching of the dangers of communism?

A cold civil war
Recent polls prove that you can teach the basics of a concept, but unless you include critical thinking and analysis, you can still completely miss the mark. For example, in 2019, a YouGov poll found that a third of millennials approved of communism.
Before you brush it off as just the young and dumb ‘kids’, remember that your favorite spicy political commentator is a millennial. It’s true, I’m considered a millennial, and I’m definitely no spring chicken.
In the same poll, 57% of 23 – 38 year olds believed that the Declaration of Independence “guarantees freedom and equality” better than the Communist Manifesto. That means more than half of people my age think one of our most important founding documents is a better blueprint for freedom than the Communist Manifesto.
Fast forward to 2021, and 28% of Gen Z Americans have a favorable view of communism, with another 30% favorable of Marxism. Only a third of Americans of this generation understand that the Chinese Communist Party killed more people than Nazism.
Think about that for a moment. What this means is that, statistically, some of that third still view communism favorably, despite knowing the amount of killing in its name.
This surge in the popularity of communism has inspired some to claim that we are in the midst of a ‘cold civil war’ against ‘awakened communists’. It is interesting to think that the words ‘vigilante’ and ‘communism’ could be such cozy bedfellows.

Compliance, the drug of temptation
Virginia is not the first state to try to dedicate a day to the victims of communism or to teach the dangers of communism in school. Last year Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill requiring Florida’s public schools to devote at least 45 minutes to teaching the dangers of communism.
This coincided with his declaration that November 7 was dedicated to “Victims of Communism Day”. For those of you who have terrible public school that teaches nothing about history, November 7th marks the Bolshevik Revolution and thus, the founding of the Soviet Union.
Among other things, the Florida bill requires teaching how communism leads to “poverty, hunger, immigration, systematic lethal violence and suppression of speech.” All valuable lessons given to the Left to silence speech and demonize hard work and wealth.
Arizona has a similar bill, and Louisiana Senator John Kennedy recently filed a similar proposal. But will any of this be enough to change the minds of Millennials and Generation Z?
Doubtful, big education has a stronghold on our youth. As one political science professor put it, “…capitalism is clearly and undeniably failing. This is directly responsible for climate catastrophe and everyone knows it.
It’s an interesting argument, given that China pollutes more than the United States. But, the truth is that capitalism is challenging because most things in life that are useful are favored.
My generation and those after have been taught to dislike hard work and perseverance. Lacking the ability to understand that life is not meant to be fair and resilience is taking hits and bouncing back.

So naturally, giving up responsibility for our lives and futures allows big government to control our futures. But, unfortunately, my generation and those who follow do not understand the price you have to pay for this medicine.
Adlai Stevenson said, “Communism is the death of the soul. It is an organization of absolute conformity — in short, oppression — and it is committed to making oppression universal. So the question remains, are we too late or are we all losing our souls to the awakened communists?
