After the Green Bay Packers’ loss to the Detroit Lions in Week 18, Aaron Rodgers’ season is over. The Packers were in a “win-and-in” situation entering the game but were unable to mount a comeback.
This is officially expected to be a very important offseason for the Packers, and it will center around Rodgers. There is no clear path for the team at the moment as they have three different options for their future.
Aaron Rodgers: Is retirement on deck?
Rodgers is very humble about his future and has done things that suggest retirement is at the forefront of his decision-making process.
He turned down Jameson Williams’ request to swap jerseys after the match. He saluted Chicago Bears fans as they took one last look at their storied rivalry.
He’s teased retirement before, and with the Packers far worse this season than they have been in recent years, it’s still a more realistic option.
Aaron Rodgers: Can He Be Traded?
If the reigning MVP decides not to retire, the Packers have two options. Trading him is an option. The market for an aging quarterback making $50 million a season will be interesting, but there will be suitors.
It might be the best option for Green Bay. This opens the door for Jordan Love to see what the team has before his contract expires. It also gets them assets in return, something a retiree doesn’t do.
The Indianapolis Colts, Las Vegas Raiders, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and more teams can call on the Packers for their quarterback.
Aaron Rodgers: Will he be back with the Packers?
This seems like the most likely outcome. Rodgers has expressed displeasure and frustration with the Packers before re-signing or, in some cases, staying with the team.
The future isn’t bright for the Packers this time around, but it would still be surprising to see him go elsewhere.
As proven this season, as long as #12 is in Green Bay, they have a shot at making the playoffs. If Rodgers doesn’t want it, a trade is less likely at this point.
