Gaetz, the line held by the Freedom Caucus in the McCarthy speakership on these seven bills

US Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Florida, is one of 20 House members withholding support from new Speaker Kevin McCarthy until the California Republican commits to bringing the seven bills to a vote, along with other concessions.

The seven bills include canceling funding for “certain balances available to the Internal Revenue Service,” including the administration’s plan to hire 87,000 IRS agents to expand tax audits of Americans.

Two bills relate to abortion: one bans taxpayer-funded abortions; Others amend Title 18 of the US Code to protect children who have had abortions or attempted abortions.

The two commit to border security measures: suspending illegal “alien alien entry” and requiring a national criminal background check system to notify US Immigration and Customs Enforcement and relevant state and local agencies when illegal alien nationals attempt to receive a firearm.

Another bill would prohibit the Secretary of Energy from sending petroleum products from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to China. Another would amend the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act to direct district attorneys’ and prosecutors’ offices to report to the US Attorney General’s office.

Among the concessions negotiated by Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, are capping spending on fiscal year 2022 levels for the 2024 fiscal year, establishing a subcommittee to investigate the Justice Department, allowing more Freedom Caucus representatives on the rules committee, and returning.
