“As the community of wakay lovers grew, I created the festival as the next step in bringing followers and vakya vendors together to celebrate and promote this delicacy globally. I am grateful to work with a team that is equally passionate about the idea and passionate about making this vision a reality,” noted Derrick Krentsil.
The first edition was held in December 2018 at the Efua Sutherland Park in Accra with seven Waakye vendors and about 500 attendees. Later editions saw steady growth in patrons and marketers.
Promoting women’s empowerment and digital inclusion
According to Lady Mardell Masopeh, one of the organisers, the Wakaye summit is particularly concerned with ensuring that vendors, most of whom are women, receive payments at the lowest possible cost. As a result, the Waakye Summit is seen as an intersection between women’s empowerment and technology. In this latest version, sellers are set to accept payments through GhQR.
“About 75 per cent of the vendors were women and as an organizer keen to promote digital transactions, we took steps and ensured that around 40 per cent of transactions were done digitally. Our aim is to increase this significantly in future editions,” he said.
