Georgia State Senator Uses ‘Uncle Tom’ Slur, Claims Ignorance of Word’s Origin

The Democratic Party has a predictable formula for dealing with people in the Republican Party, which they believe should be aligned to the left based on physical characteristics. So, if you’re a gay Republican, you’re a traitor to your fellow gays.

If you are a Republican woman, you are a traitor to your sexuality and perhaps brainwashed by Christianity and your overbearing husband. And finally, if you were a black Republican, you were a traitor to your race and often called an ‘Uncle Tom’.

Even Supreme Court justices are not immune to this kind of treatment, as the Georgia state senate explained this week. In an act of utter ignorance, Georgia State Senator Emanuel Jones called Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas ‘Uncle Tom’.

Georgia State Sen. Emanuel Jones (D) called U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas “Uncle Tom,” but opposed a bill to place a statue of Thomas in the Capitol:

    An expression

What could have caused Justice Thomas to emerge with such a grudge? A Republican-led proposal to place a statue of a Georgia native on the state capitol grounds.

Debate over the proposal prompted Senator Emanuel Jones to protest, “We can’t avoid that conversation so I’m not going to avoid it.” What conversation could it be?

“We in the black community have an expression — and I don’t want to use this label too deeply here because I’m trying to say what we have in the African American community when we talk about a person of color who goes. Historically back to the days of slavery and that person betrayed his own community — we’re black. Have a word in the community.

That’s quite a build up. So what is this term, Senator Jones? “The term we use is called ‘Uncle Tom,'” he continued.

Oh, right on time, an insult against a man based on his political views centered on the color of his skin.

I believe we have a word in the community as a whole; It is called racist. But this is not the best part; Senator Jones says:

“And ‘Uncle Tom’ is a – fictional or non-fictional character, I don’t know the origin of ‘Uncle Tom’ – but it’s about a man who sold his soul in the days of slavery. The slave masters.”

At least he admits publicly that he has no clue what he’s talking about.

In the same breath that he says he doesn’t know the origin of “Uncle Tom,” Clarence Thomas uses it to describe him for having the courage to hold his own beliefs.

This language has no place in America and certainly no place on the Senate floor. pic.twitter.com/21zgyz0Ls9

    A quick cliff note

People always bother me, and let’s be honest, mostly African Americans refer to other African Americans as ‘Uncle Tom’. For several reasons, it makes people uncomfortable due to lack of class and racism.

But what bothers me most is that the adjective doesn’t make sense. I am an avid reader and unlike most people who use the word ‘Uncle Tom’, I read Harriet Beecher Stowe’s 1852 classic ‘Uncle Tom’s Cabin’.

Harriet’s book was groundbreaking for its time because it humanized the suffering plight of slaves. This has not been done before, or at least not well done in the literature. It probably struck a chord with the white population at the time.

In his book, ‘Uncle Tom’ eventually dies for calmly refusing to give up the location of the three runaway slave women. The book was interesting because Tom is definitely a passive stoic in understanding his situation. But, on the other hand, the three slave women are brave and courageous – not often thought of as women at the time except black women.

The actual epithet comes from derivatives of this book known as ‘Tom Shows’, in which the main character of the original work is mocked and distorted. Adopting the term ‘Uncle Tom’ as a pejorative is not only insulting, but shows passive acceptance of the same culture that aims to degrade the original work.

State Senator Emanuel Jones called Justice Clarence Thomas “Uncle Tom” because he is a conservative.

    It’s never about color

The one good thing that comes out of Senator Jones’s absurd argument is that he brilliantly explains how this artificial outrage is the most spectacularly ignorant.

Mr. Jones explains, “I don’t expect people of color to have the sensitivity that we feel about the policies and practices and decisions and votes of people of color … that we’ve come together to fight against.” Ah, does disagreement with someone else’s political stances have a different emotional response for people of color than for white people?

Jones continues, “Justice Thomas’ decisions certainly sparked outrage among women, and not just women of color, but all women.”

Geez, I mean, the last woman I checked, and Justice Thomas didn’t inspire any outrage in me.

Then again, I’m probably just some dumb racist white woman who needs a black man, not telling me if Uncle Tom is fictional or how I should feel.

Mr. Jones said, “And certainly, when we look at the LGBTQ+ community, his votes and the positions he’s taken have raised outrage in that community as well.”

Bravo, Mr. Jones; You’ve inadvertently given a masterclass in poor use of the already incorrect perverted epithet because you can’t debate issues based on their principles and regress individuals to their original characteristics.

A black senator hailing George Floyd as a martyr and calling Justice Clarence Thomas “Uncle Tom” is a perfect example of the twisted and destructive mindset of thug culture prevalent in black communities.

Not the first time, won’t be the last

Unfortunately, this is not the first time Justice Thomas has been called ‘Uncle Tom’. In 2017, Mississippi Congressman Benny Thompson referred to Justice as ‘Uncle Tom’. “I’m black,” he said when CNN asked if it was appropriate to say that.

Typical response. Racism is ok if you are a minority but not ok if you are white. The fact is racism is wrong no matter what color your skin is. But as usual, the mainstream media and establishment Republicans dare not call out this activity.

Following Senator Tim Scott’s 2021 State of the Union denunciation, the clever term ‘Uncle Tim’ is trending on Twitter. And it is because of this passive acknowledgment that it is unacceptable that minority Republicans continue to face baseless and tasteless attacks from the left.

An acquaintance recently accused me that when I write articles that call out racism that originates from non-right-wing or white populations, that makes me a racist. The truth is that this country has a racism problem.

We have racist leaders in every industry and racist superior stereotypes in the media that glorify all the wrong things and trash the good things. Unfortunately, our society is too afraid to stand up and say enough is enough. Racism comes in many shapes, colors and sizes – it is not unique to just one color, group or environment.

It can also come in the form of blissful ignorance from a state senator.

If the shoe fits, wear it!!
