Chelsea Football Club has joined the rest of the football community in mourning the loss of Ghanaian forward Christian Atsu.
Christian Atsu, who once played for Chelsea Football Club, was found dead in the rubble of a collapsed building in Turkey on Saturday, February 18, 2023.
The Embassy of Ghana in Turkey is currently making necessary arrangements to transport the body to Ghana for burial with the assistance of the Government of Turkey.
The 31-year-old was caught in the 7.7 magnitude earthquake on Monday, February 6, 2023.
Earlier false reports claimed that Atsu had been rescued and taken to hospital with breathing difficulties and an injury to his right foot. However, Atsu’s team-mate Kerim Alisi took to his Instagram account to deny that the winger was found.
Turkish journalist Yagiz Sabuncuglu tweeted that Hatayspor manager Mustafa Ozat confirmed that Atsu and the club’s sporting director Taner Savut were still under the rubble.
Chelsea posted a photo of Atsu on its screen during their match today, February 18, 2023 at Stamford Bridge Stadium.
