Political Insider’s Brett Smith sat down with Responsible Statecraft Editorial Director Kelly Vlahos to discuss the possibility of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia turning from ‘Cold War to Hot War’ and whether or not the United States is likely to slip. World War with China.
Vlahos opined that a series of red lines drawn by the Biden administration in Ukraine have been continually crossed, but the president has vowed to “do whatever it takes to get Ukraine to finish its war.”
“I don’t want to escalate, but I think this thing could be grinding, destroying Ukraine because they have limited resources – more limited than Russia,” he explained.
“But at the same time, we’re pushing them to keep going.”
While the media is putting a good spin on the war with Russia, Vlahos worries that one day we are going to wake up to the realization that “the country (Ukraine) is destroyed.”
“In typical American fashion (we) will probably walk away, pay and then switch to the next front in China,” he said. “I’m afraid we’re headed in that direction.”

Vlahos warned of what would happen if we went to war with China
Kelly Vlahos, a senior adviser at the Quincy Institute, warned that any consideration of sending fighter jets to Ukraine would “escalate the war” requested by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

He points out how the United States has already committed $113 billion dollars of American taxpayer money and recently sent 31 Abrams M1 tanks to aid in the war, not to mention intellectual and emotional capital in dragging out the conflict.
Biden himself once insisted that tanks, including American military personnel, would mean “World War III.”
NATO is sending tanks to fight Russia.
In the past 24 hours, France, Germany and the US have said they will send armored vehicles to Ukraine.

“We’re training soldiers in Germany, we’re sending a lot of military hardware there, we’re spending a lot of money,” Vlahos warned.
If you suddenly turn your attention to China, which escalated matters by sending at least one spy balloon over American airspace in the past two weeks, “they become a much bigger threat.”

A war with China would be a ‘different kettle of fish’
Vlahos describes any escalation with China as a “different kettle of fish” altogether.
“They will become a much bigger threat,” he warned. “And with all the war gaming being done here in Washington, setting up scenarios between the US and China in Taiwan, we’re going to lose big time.”

The Political Insider reports on recent gaming in which China ultimately failed to secure Taiwan in the event of war, but the cost to America and its allies would be too high.
“Either we lose completely or … everyone loses,” relays Vlahos. “I mean, just tons of ships sunk, people killed.”
“These games have been going on for the last few years and they have equally dark conclusions.”

Many people in Washington like to beat the drums of war but few have any understanding of the toll the United States faces if it is dragged into a world war, fighting both Russia and, perhaps even more, China, Vlahos says.
“Yes, a hot war with China — it’s scary,” he said. “When I was a kid with the USSR in the 80s, it was terrifying to me under the threat of mutual assured destruction.”
“China is a whole different deal.”
