Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper has been declared a “fraud” after suddenly asserting a letter he signed ahead of the 2020 presidential election declaring the Hunter Biden laptop story was “distorted” by ‘Russian disinformation’.
By now, you all know the story.
In a letter signed by 51 intelligence officials published just weeks before the election, the authors argued that the laptop story had “all the classic hallmarks of a Russian information operation.”
“If we’re correct, Russia is trying to influence how Americans vote in this election, and we strongly believe that Americans should be aware of that,” he said of the New York Post’s bombshell story at the time.
“If we’re right.” If you are not sure, why publish the letter? What happened to Intel officials dealing with real intel?
With Biden heading into the second half of his term in the White House, Clapper finally decided to say that he and other intel officials were taken out of context.
“The message was ambiguous,” Clapper told The Washington Post. “What we’re doing is raising a yellow flag that this could be Russian disinformation. What we said was deliberately distorted by politics.

Clapper claims Hunter Biden laptop letter ‘distorted’
Is there any truth in what he says?
Politico, which published the letter, accompanied it with the stark headline: “Hunter Biden story is Russian disinfo, say dozens of ex-Intel officials.”
He clearly explained the motive behind the letter.
The narrative is set by the content, confirmed by the headline, and thus, fake news is born. These intel officers have achieved what Russia only dreams of in meddling in elections.
Back to the clapper: What’s the next step if you own a major news outlet and take comments you made out of context or “deliberately distorted”?
You call them and insist on a correction the next day, right? Definitely in a few days. You may need a week for it to really sink in.
James Clapper waited 847 days to claim that his comments had been manipulated.
1. Clapper & Co. “Sorry, we were wrong” should start.
2. @Natasha Bertrand He overstated the letter’s claim that the laptop was Russian disinfo. But
3. That’s what they wanted! He politicized his NatSec credentials to rig the election with lies.https://t.co/lfTIejbTWz

In fact, the New York Post editorial board offered every person who signed a letter claiming Hunter Biden had “earmarks” on his laptop an opportunity to apologize for the Russian disinformation campaign in March 2022. Clapper refused.
The post explained that his comments were doubling down.
“Yes, I stand by the statement I made at the time and pay attention to paragraph 5 of that,” Clapper said. “I think it is appropriate to sound such a note of caution at that time.”
But even then it was not said that the letter was tampered with.

He roared that it was a fraud
What makes Clapper’s claim on the Hunter Biden letter even more frightening is that another top intelligence official who signed the infamous letter recently admitted that everyone knew the contents of the laptop “had to be real” but decided to sign on anyway.
Douglas Weiss made these comments in an interview with The Australian.
“We all find that a significant portion of that content has to be real for any Russian disinformation to be credible,” admitted a former senior CIA operations official, adding a similar addendum that the letter was merely a “cautionary tale.”

See what’s happening here? They’re trying to shift the blame onto Politico for creating the narrative, or onto readers who clearly drew the intended conclusion.
Coincidentally, this new Clapper denial overlaps with House Republicans now investigating the matter.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy vowed to subpoena the intelligence officials behind the letter, promising to hold them accountable for casting doubt on a legitimate story and effectively censoring it.

Miranda Devine, New York Post reporter and book author The laptop from hellClapper and Hunter have reason to be upset with the Biden letter, accusing them of fraud.
His comments, DeWine told Fox News, “show what a fraud he is, and he’s worried that now the GOP controls the House and has sworn to pull the signers and testify under oath.”
“They’re trying to shape the narrative beforehand.”
“He was silent,” he added. “That was the message he wanted to convey, and now he’s scrambling because the GOP House is going to hold him accountable.”
Politico told the Washington Post that, contrary to Clapper’s claim, he “fairly and accurately reported — and summarized — the intelligence officials’ letter.”
You have to applaud his attempt to rewrite history two years after the fact.
