Former Chief Justice, Sophia Akufo may mean well but she misses big time in basic appreciation of the issues. Rather than asking the government for an exemption at this late stage, why didn’t she ‘exempt’ by exchanging her original bond for a new one! Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a prominent member of the New Patriotic Party, tweeted.
Gabby is the one who points out the reaction of the former Chief Justice An “emotional outburst” due to a lack of understanding of the issue hoped “to not volunteer to picket on the same issues tomorrow and after sign-up time is over.”
In a series of tweets on February 12, 2023, he wrote:
(1) As an individual bondholder I would like to thank Senyo Hosei, Gayhart Mensah and co, who volunteered to advocate, with others, for a better offer than the original offer to individual bondholders (especially pensioners). . Ayeko!

(2) Although I sympathize with those who are picketing, I think we should be brave enough to ask what is really the purpose? Why picket on an offer that has freedom you won’t accept? You are asking to be exempt but from the Voluntary Advanced Offer Program!

(4) Why picket something you don’t like (an improved offer) when you have the right not to sign up? Sorry, but I struggle to get over her emotional outburst on immunity! I hope she doesn’t volunteer to picket tomorrow and over the same issues after sign up time is up.

(5) I am one of those who pleaded for exemption of pensioners. But, the government had to balance all that with the need to protect the economy for a population of 33 million and the 15% yield matured in 5 years instead of 15 years and the individual was free not to participate.

(6) For a former CJ to take up such a noble cause as he did but at such a late hour when everything was over and for all that publicity, he owed it to himself and his social status, he demonstrated last Friday to understand the issues better than anyone. She is bigger than that.

FMR CJ spoke
Former Chief Justice, Sophia Akufo has described the government’s decision to include pensioners in the Domestic Debt Exchange Program (DDEP) as “wicked” and “disrespectful”.
He spoke to journalists after joining pensioners to picket the Ministry of Finance in Accra on Friday, February 10: “We are over 70 years now, I am no longer a government employee, my mouth is unprotected and I am speaking and saying that we have failed and it is important to respect elders. I find this evil, I find it disrespectful, I find it illegal, I find it absolutely wrong.
According to her, “All of them worked, worked very hard, could have left the country when others went but they stayed, worked for the country… a lot of people here today when they retired for the last two years, they put everything into government bonds, that’s the deal and now suddenly, the return of their investment returns should be as you dictate, with you. You want to realistically force them to agree. Why?”
“Why are we in such a mess? No one has fully explained to us, yes we have taken a loan, what is it used for? And where is the accountability? What exactly was it used for? You are not telling us how you will make things better but ‘help me and I will help you’, no, you help yourself first, I see you doing something serious because we have seen this kind of things many times” she added.
