Boston mayor’s finance director charged with money laundering in prison drug trafficking scheme
Freda Brasfield, director of administration and finance in Boston Mayor Michelle Wu’s office, was indicted Friday on charges of money laundering in a prison drug trafficking scheme.
Brassfield, a longtime Boston Democratic political activist and community organizer, appeared in Woburn Superior Court with two co-defendants, Jaime Liberty and Jaileen Rivera, who are both charged with conspiring to smuggle drugs into MCI Shirley.
Brassfield, represented by Boston attorney David Meier, pleaded not guilty to charges of money laundering and conspiracy to commit money laundering.
Brasfield, Liberty and Rivera were released on personal recognizance.
A grand jury indicted Freda Brasfield on Dec. 15, 2022, according to records in Woburn Superior Court.
Prosecutors allege the trafficking scheme extended to January 2021 and included a conspiracy to smuggle K2 and synthetic cannabinoids known as Spice to MCI Shirley. Prosecutors say it involved four inmates, including Brasfield’s nephew, and five “non-inmate relatives or significant others,” including Freda Brasfield.
According to this report, she was indicted in December but arraigned only this week. What gives?
