Award-winning Ghanaian journalist, Sadiq Adams tweeted: “I am still in touch with Christian Atsu’s management. Atsu’s teammate confirmed to him that the player had been found and taken to hospital. He expects an official statement from his club soon. Still prayers with him and everyone. Trust that God is safe.”
Earlier media reports suggested that Atsu and his club director Tanur Sawut, who were believed to be in Turkey at the time of the incident, were left under the rubble.
So far, more than 2000 people have died and rescuers are scrambling to pull survivors from the rubble after a devastating earthquake struck Turkey and Syria, leaving devastation and rubble on each side of the border.
One of the region’s strongest earthquakes in a century jolted residents from their beds around 4 a.m. Monday, sending tremors as far as Lebanon and Israel.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the 7.8-magnitude earthquake was centered 23 kilometers (14.2 miles) east of Noordagi in Turkey’s Gaziantep province at a depth of 24.1 kilometers (14.9 miles).
Christian Atsu came off the bench to score the winner for Hatayspor in the Turkish league last night.
The 31-year-old beat Hatayspor Kasimpasa to score his first goal for the club.
