The Justice Department’s search of Joe Biden’s vacation home adds another twist to the classified documents saga that has now stretched to nearly a month and includes a special counsel overseeing the hearing. The FBI’s move could reveal just how forthcoming and thorough the Biden team has been in reviewing documents stored on Mr. Biden’s personal property. Until this latest government search, Biden’s lawyers had been conducting their own review of the president’s personal residences without government investigators looking over their shoulders. They said that while they found classified material at the president’s Wilmington home, no such documents were found at the president’s beach house. If the FBI found such material, it would add fuel to assertions by Mr. Biden’s critics that the president’s team has more to the story. At the very least, the search could help alleviate some of the concerns expressed by Republicans. The government has held Mr. Biden to a lower level of scrutiny and suspicion than Donald Trump, whose Mar-a-Lago estate was searched by the FBI last August. When it was first revealed that Mr. Biden’s lawyers had found classified material in his home and personal office, the former president, Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy and other conservatives openly wondered why government investigators had not targeted the current president. , Mr. Biden’s defenders are suggesting that many of Biden’s properties were searched, but there is no indication that the FBI has investigated Mr. Trump’s New Jersey and New York homes.
