Representative Maxine Waters fired back at two Democrat senators — Kirsten Sinema and Joe Manchin — who suggested they “don’t give a damn” about police reform.
While Waters (D-CA) is not equipped to be intellectually sensitive, her comments were an apparent attempt to use the recent tragic police-involved death of Tyre Nichols to put emotional pressure on her colleagues to end the filibuster.
“We’re going to keep fighting, we’re going to keep begging, we’re going to keep doing everything we can,” Waters said during an appearance on MSNBC’s “Simon,” adding that police reform efforts have failed because “we don’t have enough members who care enough about this. Problem.”
“When you look at the two Democrats — Manchin, of course, and the woman from Arizona — they don’t care about this,” he asserted.
“They have the power to decide what happens in the Senate by using their two votes more than anything else.”

Maxine Waters takes a swipe at Manchin and the movie on police reform
Maxine Waters’ argument is an odd flex considering that Democrats actually used the filibuster in 2020 to block police reform efforts led by Senator Tim Scott (R-SC).
“The reality is that Democrats used what they called a racist filibuster to block my reforms that they are now adopting,” Scott said in a statement at the time.

Scott’s proposal sought to encourage the hiring of minorities in police departments, implement a database to hold bad cops accountable, and restrict chokeholds.
And yes, the Democrats done Use the filibuster – a tool they now say is ‘white nationalists’ and a ‘Jim Crow relic’ to block it. That same filibuster Waters shows members of his party don’t care about police reform.
Incidentally, Manchin (D-WV) was one of the few Democrats who voted to begin debate on Scott’s police reform bill, but ultimately fell short as he needed 60 votes to overcome a filibuster.
Waters should be praising his move.

Waters’ History of Anti-Police Rhetoric
Maxine Waters is not as interested in meaningful police reform as she is about making sure the police as a whole unit pay for the sins of those who betrayed their oath to serve and protect Memphis.
In June 2020, Waters suggested that police reform was not enough and that steps needed to be taken to eliminate “racism, ignorance.” [and] Stupid cops” and their unions.
She later claimed that policing was “racist” by its very nature.
“This justice system is broken,” Waters said. “It’s really not in our favor, and it’s basically the reason to make sure that we never get beyond this suppression and this oppression.”
“‘There’s something wrong with our policing,’ was the message from the rioters at the time,” he said. “It’s racism.”

Waters confronted police after a 2020 traffic stop involving a black driver, pulling over to make sure the officers involved stayed in line.

Last year, left-leaning Democrat Representative Mondair Jones, in a speech on the House floor, labeled senators who voted against changing the filibuster rules, including Sinéma and Mnuchin, as “white nationalists.”

The filibuster, according to Waters and Jones, is a tool of pro-police racists. Except when their own party uses it.
