One of my favorite children’s books is ‘If You Give a Mouse a Cookie’ by Laura Numeroff. In it, you learn that if you give in to the mouse’s requests, he will continue to ask for more and more, and once you give him a cookie, he wants a glass of milk.
Apparently, no one at the Pentagon has read this literary masterpiece, or perhaps they don’t care about its underlying message. Rather predictably, now that President Biden has promised to deliver tanks to Ukraine, he’s asking for a game-changing glass of milk — fighter jets.
Will the West deliver fighter jets and will this escalate this war from a proxy Cold War to a real-time hot conflict? The answer, I’m afraid, is a complex and equally predictable yes.

Whispers
As usual, the leaks from the Pentagon remain unnamed but consistent. It’s always the “people in the know” conversations that like to whisper in the ears of the mainstream media to lay eggs of fiction to take the pulse of the American people or start a stalled initiative.
According to Politico, “three people with knowledge of the discussions” claim that “a contingent of military officials” are trying to push the Pentagon to send F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine. Officially the Pentagon and the White House claim there is no decision or plan to send F-16s, but if you look closely enough the signs are there.
Defense contractor juggernaut Lockheed Martin is poised for a decision. COO Frank St. John confirmed that there are “A lot of conversations about third-party transfers of F-16s.”

What does that mean? Other countries that have American F-16s may provide them to Ukraine. At the same time, we resupply a third-party country – for example, a country like Norway may transfer the F-16s we gave them to Ukraine.
Mr. St. John explained that Lockheed Martin “Buildings on F-16s in Greenville (South Carolina) will be ramped up to get to where we can efficiently backfill any countries that choose to make third-party transfers to assist in the current conflict.”
A pretty clear indicator that the F-16s will be heading to Ukraine in one form or another; So much for not escalating the conflict.
Noted, but there seem to be some real government corruption issues.
The fundamental question remains: What is a realistic path to peace? There doesn’t seem to be one.

It’s fine, it’s fine
The arrogance displayed by our officers and the constant underestimation of our adversaries never ceases to amaze me. For example, an unnamed DOD official said boldly when asked whether sending F-16s would lead to an escalation of the conflict, at which point Ukraine would serve as our proxy between the United States and Russia.
“Let’s face it, nuclear war is not going to happen on F-16s,” says the confidential source.
Aside from the fact that escalation doesn’t just have to cause nuclear war, this guy’s hubris is astounding. Let’s hope this isn’t the same guy who advised General Mark Milley last year that Ukraine would fall within 72 hours.
There is broad approval in Congress to send Ukraine F-16s to join DC, Democrats’ new war hawks.
“You can’t half the battle” explained Democratic Congressman Mike Quigley.
Interesting, because that’s what we did for 20 years in Afghanistan, but I digress. He said we owe him about aid to Ukraine “Any work, send them what they want.”
Most likely, this will happen from last year’s event. In fact, the Netherlands has indicated that it is open to transferring its F-16s to Ukraine if asked.

A well-oiled war machine
When news broke that President Biden had agreed to send tanks to Ukraine to grease the wheels of Germany sending their tanks, the narrative seemed to be that this would be a game changer for Ukraine and drag the United States deeper into this war. However, the truth is a bit more complicated.
“These tanks are not available in large quantities in our US stocks,” Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh explained. “That’s why it will take months to transfer these M1A2 Abrams to Ukraine.”
how many months In a year according to some estimates. Talk about a long battle.
Isn’t that kind of thing though? We promise tanks that we can’t provide for another year, allowing the war to maintain its slow simmer while spending more and more money on defense capabilities that feed that military-industrial complex.
Lockheed Martin earns $950 million in missile orders. The conflict resulted in Raytheon Technologies being awarded $2 billion in missile system contracts. War continues to be good business.
Trump finally snaps at the Ukraine-sanctioned narrative— nuking the truth:
“My personality kept us away from the war. Putin would never go in. Even now, I can solve it within 24 hours.

Sound familiar?
You have to give the Ukrainian government some credit though. He has proved his mettle on the international stage. Mykhailo Podolyak, a Ukrainian adviser, described some of his Western partners as having a “conservative” attitude toward sending advanced weapons.
This attitude as he said a “Fear of Changes in International Architecture.”
Ukraine “needs to work with this” when negotiating for more aid, he said. After the approval of the tanks, President Volodymyr Zelensky said “Russia wants to drag out the war and exhaust our forces. So we have to make time our weapon. We have to speed up events, speed up supplies and open up new weapon options for Ukraine.
If you give a mouse a cookie, it wants a fighter plane. And as Ukrainian consultant Yuri Sak said, “We’ll get F-16s.”
I have no doubt you will. Welcome to the new Eternal War world.
This mission creep is very familiar to another proxy war we fought against the then Soviet Union. Too bad our ‘experts’ and legislators have short memory spans.
Let’s hope it ends better for the Ukrainian people than it did for the Afghans.
