The Ghana Armed Forces says it is taking tough measures to combat the unauthorized use of military uniforms and equipment by civilians.
In a statement released by the army, “The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) wishes to inform that it has taken more stringent measures in accordance with the law and its rules of engagement, to ‘appropriately’ combat the growing threat by individuals and various groups, using military-style clothing, equipment and other equipment in the country.”
“The GAF is taking these additional steps following revelations and investigations which indicate that some miscreants are deliberately acquiring these military-style clothing and equipment, including guns, for diabolical reasons thereby raising tensions in some communities and bringing the Ghana Armed Forces into disrepute.”
This comes after the GAF recently arrested a man in Bawku who was involved in re-spraying a vehicle in military pattern colors on Wednesday, December 21, 2022.
Also, according to reports, some individuals dressed in military patterns and shades of military colors were allegedly involved in several criminal activities late last year and early this month. These incidents have led to baseless accusations and the spread of false information in the media that military personnel are responsible for these acts.
GAF has therefore assured the public that its personnel are wearing military style clothing and making all efforts to nab these alleged criminals who use military equipment to commit crimes and deceive the unsuspecting public.
“These miscreants and crooks are derailing the immense role the Ghana Armed Forces play in keeping the country safe, restoring normalcy in some conflict-affected areas and curbing crime in various parts of the country.
“GAF, therefore, requires the maximum cooperation of all Ghanaians as GAF puts in these stringent measures to curb the wearing of military uniforms and use of military-grade equipment by unauthorized persons as prohibited under NLCD 177. Violators of this ordinance and others aiding in this violation will be dealt with and found to face the full rigors of the law. will be done,” the statement said.
The Ghana Armed Forces has assured the public of its commitment to protect civilians at all times. It is therefore seeking the support of all to implement these measures in the interest of peace and security which is essential for the socio-economic development of Ghana.
